Living Legends Podcast: Harold Terens on Love, Luck, and Living Life Fully
What’s the secret to a long and happy life? Harold Terens, a 101-year-old WWII veteran, sums it up in two words: “So what?”
Stress less. Love more. Keep going. That’s Harold’s philosophy, and it’s why he’s still embracing new adventures, proving that independence isn’t about age—it’s about mindset. As we celebrate National Senior Independence Month, Harold’s story is a powerful reminder that living boldly and staying connected is a way of life that continues to bring joy to one’s journey.
Born in 1923 in the Bronx, New York, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at 19. As a radio mechanic in the 350th Fighter Squadron of the 8th Air Force, he helped keep Allied aircraft in the fight. After D-Day, he volunteered for a high-risk mission to rescue downed pilots, witnessing firsthand the brutal realities of war.
Harold’s service took him from Europe to North Africa, where he was once drugged, robbed, and left in the Sahara Desert, to the Pacific—until the war’s end led to his honorable discharge in 1945.

Reinventing Life at 100
While many slow down with age, Harold did the opposite. At 100 years old, he returned to Normandy—not for war, but for love. He married his sweetheart, Jeanne Swerlin, in a heartwarming ceremony that captured international attention. The newlyweds were celebrated by world leaders at a state dinner in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden. Harold reflects back calling it the best day he’s ever had.
Staying Connected, Staying Independent
At 101, Harold leads an incredibly busy life, but he still prioritizes staying connected with the people who matter most. With eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, he embraces technology, using his GrandPad to keep in touch. It shows how important it is to stay engaged to maintain a fulfilling and independent life.
